What Is Ethereum?

Ethereum is a decentralized platform that runs smart contracts — self-executing programs that automatically enforce agreements without intermediaries. Its native currency, ETH, is used to pay for transactions and computational services on the network. Ethereum launched in 2015 and is the foundation for the majority of decentralized finance (DeFi) applications.

How Does Ethereum Work?

Ethereum uses a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism (since the Merge in 2022). Validators stake ETH to propose and attest new blocks. Smart contracts are written in Solidity and deployed to the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), which executes code deterministically across all nodes in the network.

What Drives Ethereum's Price?

  • Gas demand — More transactions and smart contract interactions increase gas fees and ETH demand.
  • DeFi and NFT activity — The growth of decentralized finance and non-fungible tokens drives on-chain activity and ETH demand.
  • Staking yield — ETH staking provides a yield that attracts long-term holders and reduces circulating supply.
  • Institutional adoption — ETF approvals and corporate treasury allocations increase demand.
  • Layer 2 scaling — Rollups and L2 solutions reduce fees and increase throughput, making Ethereum more usable and attractive.

How to Get Started

  1. Buy ETH on a reputable exchange or through a self-custody wallet.
  2. Set up a wallet that supports smart contracts (e.g., MetaMask, Rainbow).
  3. Explore DeFi protocols — start with a small amount to understand the risks.
  4. Consider staking ETH to earn yield while supporting the network.
  5. Always do your own research before interacting with any smart contract.
