Should Ethereum burn the very yield that secures its consensus layer? That question now sits at the center of a protocol fight pitting two of DeFi's most influential founders against a core developer proposal that would redirect staking rewards to a permanent burn address.
EIP-8363, previously discussed under a different number, introduces a tapered issuance burn that scales with total staked ether. As the staking ratio rises, a growing share of newly issued ETH would be destroyed rather than paid to validators. The mechanism aims to cap staking participation near 25% of supply by making additional deposits progressively less attractive.
Stani Kulechov, founder of Aave, and Mike Silagadze, founder of ether.fi, argue the burn breaks the economic contract between the protocol and its validators. Both protocols operate large staking integrations — Aave through its v3 markets and ether.fi through its liquid staking token eETH. A reduction in net staking yield flows directly to their bottom lines and to the users who deposit ETH into their systems.
How the tapered burn works
The proposal sets a target staking ratio of 25%. Below that threshold, issuance follows the current curve. Above it, each incremental validator receives a smaller share of new issuance while the difference is sent to the burn address. At 50% staked, the effective annual reward drops by roughly half compared to the status quo. The taper is continuous, not a cliff, but the inflection point creates a sharp disincentive for new deposits once the 25% level is breached.

The burn mechanism requires a hard fork, introducing execution risk at the consensus layer. A miscalibrated taper could overshoot the 25% target, driving validators to exit and weakening chain security. Governance risk is equally acute. The proposal bypasses the typical EIP champion process and arrives at core developers with two major DeFi founders publicly opposed.
