On-chain data shows that the volume of Bitcoin moving from long-dormant wallets has dropped to its lowest level since the third quarter of 2022, signaling a notable pullback in distribution by early adopters and long-term holders. The research, published by blockchain analytics firm Thorn, indicates that the cohort often labeled "Bitcoin OGs" has largely paused the profit-taking that characterized much of the past two years.

The metric tracks coins that have not moved for at least five years, a threshold commonly used to identify supply held by entities with deep conviction or early acquisition dates. When these coins awaken, it typically reflects strategic selling into strength or rebalancing. According to Thorn's latest dashboard, the seven-day average of such movements fell below 1,200 BTC in recent sessions, a level not seen since the market's mid-2022 trough.

Analysts at the firm attribute the slowdown to a combination of price consolidation and a shift in holder psychology. After Bitcoin's run toward $73,000 earlier this year, many long-term participants executed sizable transfers to exchanges and custodial services, locking in gains accumulated over multiple cycles. With the asset trading in a narrower range since March, the urgency to distribute has diminished.

Market structure observers note that the decline in ancient supply movement reduces a key source of potential sell pressure. In previous cycles, spikes in dormant coin activity often preceded local tops or extended corrections. The current lull does not guarantee upside, but it removes a historically reliable overhang that has weighed on rallies.

Thorn's report also highlights that the composition of dormant supply has shifted. A growing share of coins crossing the five-year threshold now originates from the 2019-2020 accumulation window, rather than the 2011-2013 era. This evolution reflects the natural aging of the network's user base and the increasing institutionalization of early holdings through custodians and funds.
