A consortium led by Strategy and global asset manager BlackRock has committed $15 million to fortify the Bitcoin network against the looming threat of quantum computing, the group announced Thursday.
The initiative aims to research and develop quantum-resistant cryptographic solutions for Bitcoin before sufficiently powerful quantum machines become capable of breaking the elliptic-curve signatures that currently secure the network's transactions. Industry estimates suggest that a fault-tolerant quantum computer could pose a practical risk to existing public-key cryptography within the next decade.
The funding pool will be directed toward engineering upgrades to Bitcoin's core protocol, including post-quantum signature schemes that can be implemented without disrupting the network's existing consensus rules. The consortium is expected to coordinate with Bitcoin Core developers and academic researchers to identify the most viable migration path.
Quantum computers leverage qubits to perform certain calculations exponentially faster than classical machines. While today's quantum processors remain too small and error-prone to threaten Bitcoin, the consortium's preemptive approach mirrors a growing consensus across the cryptocurrency and cybersecurity sectors that migrating critical infrastructure to quantum-safe algorithms must begin years before the threat materializes.
Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, has been one of Bitcoin's most prominent institutional backers, holding tens of billions of dollars in the asset on its balance sheet. BlackRock's participation signals that the world's largest asset manager views quantum resilience as a core requirement for Bitcoin's long-term viability as an institutional-grade asset.
