The initiative addresses a long-recognized vulnerability: quantum computers powerful enough to run Shor's algorithm could theoretically break the elliptic-curve cryptography that protects Bitcoin wallets and transaction signatures. While such machines do not yet exist at scale, the timeline for their arrival is narrowing as tech giants and nation-states pour resources into quantum research.
Coinbase's post-quantum custody system is designed to protect customer funds against a future in which classical cryptographic assumptions no longer hold.
