August was bitcoin's best month of 2026. CoinGecko data shows the asset rose roughly 24%, lifting it from the $60,000s to briefly over $80,000 before settling back. As September opens, the rally that desk traders rode has produced three warning signs worth watching: exchange balances, spot demand and ETF flows have all turned.
The signs matter because momentum flipped late in the month. Per CoinGecko, CoinGecko has BTC at $77,780, down 0.42% in 24 hours and up 0.90% over the trailing 7 days. Total crypto market cap sits at $2.61 trillion with 24-hour volume of $66.1 billion after a 3.38% market cap pullback.
The three signals turning at once
The first warning is exchange balances. Bitcoin sitting on exchanges is bitcoin ready to sell, when those balances climb, desks read it as supply returning to the market. The second is spot demand, which cooled as the asset pulled back from the $80,000 mark.
The third is ETF flows, the institutional channel that helped drive the August advance. Flow data tells the rest. CoinGecko data shows bTC dominance holds at 59.6%, while ether takes 11.2% of the total market cap.
Per CoinGecko, circulating supply stands at 20.08 million against the same total, the full float is in circulation, so the supply story depends on where coins sit, not how many exist
What September's calendar could settle
The market has two reference points to measure against. The first is the $80,000 level bitcoin touched but could not hold, it now marks the resistance any renewed move has to clear. The second is the monthly close, which locked in the 24% gain and set the baseline for September's first sessions.
How this plays out rests on one question: whether the three signals are a pause or a reversal. A rally that runs on ETF inflows can stall fast when those flows turn, and the spot market has already cooled from its peak.
CoinGecko data shows if exchange balances keep climbing with no offsetting demand, the pullback from $80,000 has room to extend. The monthly open around $77,780 is the level that matters most. A clean hold above it keeps the August trend intact; a break lower would test whether the 24% gain had real room underneath it.
