ether.fi has severed the native restaking link between weETH and EigenLayer, completing a strategic pivot that has been unfolding since April. The protocol's weETH token will no longer accrue EigenLayer points or restaking rewards, with that exposure fully migrating to weETHs — a separate liquid restaking token built on Symbiotic's infrastructure.

The technical substance of the shift lies in architecture. EigenLayer's design requires native restaking — users deposit staked ETH or LSTs directly into EigenLayer contracts, which then delegate to operators. Symbiotic takes a different approach: it uses a vault-based model where restaking happens through curated vaults that allocate to networks and operators. weETHs plugs into that vault layer, while weETH reverts to a pure liquid staking token representing staked ETH without restaking exposure.
