Aave Freezes tBTC Reserve After Binance Hack Triggers Emergency Response

By CoinBatmi Newsroom · · 2 min read

Aave froze tBTC reserves and blocked new loans after Binance hot wallet exploit, sending AAVE token crashing 32.9% to $125.8.

Aave froze its tBTC reserve after a massive Binance hot wallet exploit triggered emergency response across all DeFi lending markets.

At 9 pm UTC on Oct. 29, a Binance hot wallet on Ethereum sent 167,464 ETH and 63 ERC-20 tokens in a single transaction to an exploiter address. The same attacker received another 28,006 ETH from a second Binance hot wallet on Ethereum, along with funds from Arbitrum, Optimism, and Avalanche.

Aave responded immediately by freezing all markets across V3 and V4, stopping everyone, including the exploiter, from opening new supply or borrow positions.

The emergency freeze sent shockwaves through DeFi, pushing the AAVE token to drop 32.9% from its June-September peak of $188 to $125.8. The token broke through the critical $140 support level, drawing traders to the next psychological barrier at $113.

Aave's decline of 5.67% outperformed broader market weakness, with Bitcoin down 3.46% and Ethereum down 3.93% over the same period. Total liquidations exceeded $1.50 billion, mostly long positions.

Risk management provider LlamaRisk executed emergency cap cuts and rate reductions. The measures preserved about $3.8 billion of unused borrowing capacity while preventing new collateral loans. USDT and USDC borrowing ceilings were reduced but maintained above pre-exploit debt levels, ensuring existing users could still access their funds.

Markets reopened with complex access rules. Only previously active positions can now trade, with new borrowing blocked for tokens like USDT, USDC, and WETH. Suppliers need available pool liquidity and healthy account status to withdraw. The rate structure remains conflicted, with some reserves showing 100% utilization and others maintaining higher borrowing costs.

Technical indicators remain bearish. The fair value gap at the 78.6% Fibonacci retracement level around $129 has been breached, while the bullish order block near $115 is being tested. Traders wait for demand signs or a price move back above $120 before considering new positions.

The weekly session needs to stay above $113.4 to avoid a deeper correction toward $213-$240 if buyers reappear.

The Binance hack exposed vulnerabilities in cross-chain hot wallet management, forcing Aave to balance security with user access. Emergency response preserved most existing borrowing capacity while preventing further exploitation, creating a complex trading environment that favors established users over new entrants.
