BNB crossed $800 on Monday for the first time since late January, topping out at $806 before trading swung between $796 and $806, Bitcoin.com News reports. Dogecoin added 14% in the same session, the largest one-day gain among large-cap tokens, and XRP went from $1.40 to $1.54.
All three moved inside a bigger rally that carried bitcoin through $87,000 for the first time since January 30. A short squeeze did much of the lifting.
A short squeeze is a bet that pays when a price falls; if the price rises instead, the trader has to buy the token back to close the position, and that forced buying pushes the price up further. Santiment, a market intelligence firm, counted about $648 million in those forced buybacks as bitcoin approached $85,000.
That is fresh demand of a sort, but it is demand from people who were losing, not people who chose to buy.
Altcoin market value added about $50 billion in a day
Ether led the broader move, briefly touching $2,800 before sellers pulled it back to $2,770, a 6% gain, according to Bitcoin.com News. That put ether's market value at $338 billion and cut its year-to-date losses to under 7%. It is still 44% below its all-time high of $4,946.05, set on August 24, 2025.
Across the board, total altcoin market capitalization went from roughly $1.25 trillion to nearly $1.3 trillion. Most tokens gained between 3% and 10%, though the day had clear losers too: Zcash dipped 1.4%, NEAR fell 1.6%, and ENA slipped 4.7%.
Trading volume backed the move, with bitcoin and major altcoins posting their highest combined weekly volume since early March, Santiment says. The firm's read is that the crowd flipped from hesitation to conviction, and it warns that one more vertical spike in volume could mean buyers are chasing rather than arriving.
XRP's jump still leaves it down double digits for the year
The levels that decide whether this holds
Two numbers resolve the question. BNB's floor from Monday's session is $796; a close below that erases the $800 breakout. Ether has overhead supply waiting near $3,000, a resistance level technical analysts in the Bitcoin.com News report expect it to test, and some of them warn a bull trap may be forming.
Standard Chartered's year-end target for ether sits at $7,500, still a long way from $2,770.
