Eli Ben-Sasson plans Starknet transition to standalone quantum layer-1
By CoinBatmi Newsroom · · 2 min read
Starknet founder Eli Ben-Sasson confirmed plans to pivot from an Ethereum rollup to a standalone quantum-resistant L1 by 2027, decoupling security from Ethereum consensus.
Eli Ben-Sasson triggered swift repositioning across decentralized venues at 14:00 UTC on Friday as a 410 ETH sell order hit Binance. The Starknet transition from Ethereum rollup infrastructure to an independent base layer represents an unexpected divergence from standard scaling models.
For years, Starknet functioned strictly as a validity rollup, anchoring its security directly to Ethereum consensus. Every batch of execution relied on Ethereum for data availability and final settlement, tethering Starknet to Ethereum’s $296.08 billion market capitalization and 10.7% market dominance.

The pivot arrived on October 16, 2026, when Ben-Sasson confirmed during an interview with Camila Russo that Starknet is actively considering an exit plan from Ethereum. StarkWare intends to re-architect the network as a standalone layer-1 blockchain targeting deployment by 2027.
The transition would convert Starknet from an off-chain execution environment into a sovereign system. Rather than posting STARK proofs to Ethereum contracts, Starknet sequencers would settle state transitions internally on a native validator network.
STARK proofs and the standalone fee market
CoinGecko recorded ETH at $2,424.25 at 14:00 UTC, down 0.91% across 24 hours. Daily volume across Ethereum markets reached $12,491.0 million, while the circulating ETH supply held flat at 122.14 million tokens.

Rollups consume Ethereum blockspace to publish proofs, generating direct protocol revenue. If Starknet departs, Ethereum loses proof verification fees, while Starknet captures all sequencing margin directly in its native token.
Users on Starknet would pay validation costs exclusively to local nodes. That decoupling removes Ethereum gas spikes from rollup execution, but it strips Starknet users of Ethereum validator-backed economic finality.
Starknet standalone blockchain 2027 timeline
The technical justification anchors on post-quantum cryptography. Ben-Sasson stated the goal is building the first fully quantum-resistant base network, using hash-based STARK cryptography to secure consensus against quantum computing breakthroughs.
Traders face operational shifts before 2027 arrives. Bridged capital must transition from an L1-to-L2 rollup bridge contract into an inter-chain messaging protocol, shifting the security model from trustless validity checks to multi-network bridge assumptions.
The engineering timeline hinges on testnet releases of Starknet's independent consensus engine. Developers must demonstrate that a sovereign STARK-based validator set can deliver faster settlement than Ethereum layer-1 blocks before mainnet migration begins.
