Accounting restatements usually unwind financial adjustments, but the Securities and Exchange Commission approved exchange rules that make cash settlements on Coinbase earnings bets completely irreversible.
The approved regulatory framework permits Cboe to list cash-settled contracts tied directly to operational metrics, including Coinbase trading volume and MARA Holdings bitcoin production. Under the verified exchange rule filing, once a contract settles against an initial corporate release, that payout is final.
Any future restatement or retroactive revision by corporate management will have zero effect on settled funds.

The Cboe Finality Mechanism
Cash settlement means market participants receive a cash credit or debit rather than physical shares or digital tokens. The derivative calculates payout by comparing the contract strike level against the metric reported by the company on earnings day.
Once Coinbase reports quarterly platform volume, the exchange calculates the settlement value and instructs the clearinghouse to disburse cash to winning positions. If an auditor forces an adjustment weeks later, the exchange will not claw back money. The payout is locked permanently at the initial settlement timestamp.
To prevent trading freezes, Cboe established backup procedures for instances where corporate data is delayed or missing entirely. The rulebook sets alternate pricing formulas to close expired contracts if a firm misses reporting deadlines. This ensures positions resolve cleanly without tying up clearinghouse capital.

Restatement Risk for Exchange Traders
This settlement design insulates clearinghouses from prolonged legal disputes over restatements. However, it shifts the operational risk of preliminary corporate reporting entirely to traders holding the contracts.
Traders taking exposure on metrics like MARA bitcoin output must now factor in the risk of corporate misreporting on release night. If a firm overstates production and later issues a downward correction, short sellers have no legal recourse under exchange rules to recover lost settlement capital.
CoinGecko puts Bitcoin at $80,976 as of 14:00 UTC on Oct 18, 2026, showing a 0.47% dip across the last 24 hours. Total crypto market capitalization stands at $2.70 trillion, with BTC market dominance holding at 60.1%.
While broader crypto assets retreated 4.51% over the past day, institutional derivatives infrastructure continues to harden its clearing boundaries.
Cboe will now prepare the contracts for formal listing, subject to standard clearinghouse notices. Traders will look to the exchange's upcoming product circulars to confirm the first listed expiration cycles and initial margin tiers.
